Apocalypto...is intense.
Apocalypto is riveting and will have you on the edge of your seat. Who could have imagined peering into the lives of indigenous people, responsible for amazing artifacts and Mayan ruins could be suspenseful? Centuries before explorers claim to discover the rest of the world, Mayans were constructing pyramids, and on their journey to shaping civilization. The film follows one man’s struggle to return to his pregnant wife & child, after he hides them in an empty water well for safe keeping during an attack. Committed to his father, he returns to fight and protect his home and people from being ravaged. Women were raped & killed, children were abandoned, and the men that remained alive were subdued, shackled and marched back to base to be enslaved or sacrificed.
GO SEE, Apocalypto, the cinematography is breathtaking, and the story is extraordinary. Mel Gibson, despite his politics, unsavory words and poor behavior, has done a compelling job as a director recreating and depicting the lives of the Mayans. It is a world that is almost unimaginable, civil war before we understand what civil war meant. This film feels pure & primal, the brutality of human sacrifices and the desire to rule is powerful, and in many respects not so different from the world we live in today.

I agree with your take on Apocalypto. You said, 'it is a world almost unimaginable" I am shocked that more people didn't go see this film. I thought it would be huge. Do you think more people didn't see it because it is so foreign. I've never sen a film about Mayans. It peaked my interest. It would be on my top ten list!
Hello Sharon -
Thanks your feedback. I have yet to see a film about the Mayans on the Silver Screen, just documentaries, etc.
I think many stayed away from the film, in part because of Mel Gibson's poor behavior. Drinking & driving, and making racist comments under any circumstance is unacceptable. Many showed their disappointment, by not attending, and I do not blame them one bit. Also, I think attendance was low, because many were uninformed, it was unclear what the film was truly about when you saw the trailer.
I believe in the long run, people will remain curious, and as a result, I anticipate Apocalypto will do well when the DVD is released. But who know? Again, thank you for your comments, they are truly appreciated, and always welcomed!
Happy New Year,
Maverick
It will be considered for an Oscar nomination. Very suspenceful and a good look into the fall of a "Great Empire" and what fate is become of them. Though graffic i think he had to show how the Mayans in their fears and beliefs were so brutal during their reign.
Interesting perspective, thank you for your comment. Oscar nomination...perhaps for the cinematographer, or director of photograpy, or make up, etc.; but a trip to the podium specifically for Gibson is quite unlikely. I think the members of the Academy will reveal their disappointment in his poor personal behavior when it comes time to vote. Yet, it does not discount the fact the film is powerful and important.
